Core Curriculum

The IAIS Insurance Core Principles (ICPs) provide a globally accepted framework for the supervision of the insurance sector. They are suitable to apply to insurance supervision in all jurisdictions, regardless of the level of development or sophistication of the insurance markets and the type of insurance products or services being supervised.

Purpose of Core Curriculum (CC)

The purpose of the CC is to provide its readers with resources that help them better understand the underlying concepts, terminology and interactions that will support their successful implementation of IAIS supervisory material. The CC covers concepts, relationships and supervisory practices that underpin the successful implementation of the IAIS supervisory material in jurisdictions across the globe. They are not intended to provide detailed guidance on the detail of implementing ICPs or their component Standards as specific guidance is attached to ICPs and their Standards. There is also a focus on the practical application of supervisory concepts.

The CC provides many modules that span the coverage of all the ICPs. Users may select topics of interest to suit their needs when they use this resource. As supervisory practices and experience evolve, the CC is also expected to continue to evolve. The IAIS encourages its members as well as competent institutions to use the materials widely in their education and training programs in line with its objectives.

This project

The initial CC was completed in 2006 as a joint project between the IAIS and the World Bank. They reflected the ICPs as of 2003. The IAIS is updating the CC to reflect the current ICPs (as of November 2017) and to reflect supervisory experience and learnings since the initial CC was completed. The project has been supported by over 100 expert volunteers from over 40 jurisdictions. As development continues, these number can be expected to grow.
